The Sydney SCBWI Conference—September 4-6, 2016

If you’re serious about the business of children’s books, book your spot at the SCBWI Biennial Conference!  This is an exciting opportunity to network with local and international industry professionals and take your work to the next level.  The keynote speaker for 2016 is Tara Weikum, Vice President of HarperCollins Children's Books USA, and as a very special feature there will be international skype sessions with: Suzanne Murphy, President & Publisher HarperCollins Children's Books USA;  Mallory Kass, Commissioning editor for Scholastic Children's Books USA; and Caldecott award winning US illustrator Paul O. Zelinsky.

The conference program includes publisher panels, pitch sessions, craft sessions, masterclasses, and book launches. In addition to face-to-face manuscript and portfolio critiques, this year we will be offering delegates the opportunity to book International distance critiques with commissioning editors and agents from high profile publishing houses in the US. It’s not all about work, of course! There’s lots of chatting, celebrating, sharing and networking throughout the conference, and a chance to let your hair down at the fabulous SCBWI dinner dance party on the Monday night.

The Illustrator Showcase is an exclusive event, displaying SCBWI talent to leading professionals in the children's book industry. At the 2014 SCBWI showcase more than fifty publishers, editors, designers and other industry professionals viewed the exhibition resulting in contracts for new and established illustrators. It's an unprecedented opportunity for illustrators to get their work seen by publishers.

The conference has limited tickets and sells out fast, but if you aren't able to make it, our Roving Reporters do a fabulous job recording everything that happens on our website, Facebook page and blog.

This year we are delighted to be able to offer the following Conference awards:

For illustrators:
Illustrator Showcase Awards to two outstanding portfolios (as judged by attending publishers)
The HarperCollins Portfolio Award—an in-house meeting with a publisher at the Sydney or Melbourne offices
The Penguin Random House Portfolio Award—an in-house meeting with a publisher or commissioning editor in the Sydney offices.

For writers:
The Andrea Pinkney Writer Award—a personal Skype critique from Andrea Pinkney, Vice-President Scholastic USA and New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of more than thirty books. CLICK HERE to enter!
