Award-winning picture book author and editor, Sue Whiting, has been thinking a lot lately about creating picture books in today’s world, and what it takes to create a truly successful picture book. Join her in this Zoom session where she will share her insights and top tips for successful picture book creation. Celebrate with the winners of the inaugural SCBWIAustEastNZ Australian Picture Book Illustrator Awards! They’ll share their top illustrating tips and demonstrate an important aspect of their craft. Zoom Manuscript or Portfolio Critiques with Sue Whiting
We are fortunate to have secured four 15 minute manuscript or portfolio critiques with Award-winning picture book author and editor, Sue Whiting before the SCBWI Zoom event.
Critiques are 15 minutes plus an additional scheduled time for changeover. Critiques are limited to SCBWI members attending this Zoom event. At time of booking you will be able to choose your preference from the available time slots. Critique Tickets will be released June 2nd at 8am. This is an automated opening of tickets so it is first in best dressed!
Following your successful booking, submit your manuscript via the form linked below. Deadline for manuscripts is June 6th, 2021. Please submit only once with the final version that you would like to be critiqued.
You will be sent an email with instructions for your Zoom Critique at the time of booking.

Submission Guidelines for Manuscript Critiques
Following your booking CLICK HERE to submit your manuscript or picture book text or thumbnails. Please take note of the June 6th, 2021 deadline and the format for submissions. Unfortunately, submissions that are late or that do not conform to the specifications cannot be accepted. Please submit only once with the final version that you would like to be critiqued.
Your Manuscript critique submission should include the following:
An overview of your project to a maximum of 1 page including your name, email and website (if applicable)
AND IN THE SAME DOCUMENT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
An outline of your project idea with synopsis and short writing samples for comment and discussion to a maximum of 10 pages, double spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or similar
An extract of your draft manuscript to a maximum of 10 pages, double spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or similar
A full picture book draft text to a maximum of 10 pages, double spaced in 12pt Times Roman or similar (One picture book only, even if it’s just a few pages long)
If a writer-illustrator an illustrated picture book dummy with text. (One picture book only)
Most assessors prefer word document format so they can make inline notes, however, pdfs are also acceptable. Picture books in thumbnail form can be supplied as pdfs. Please label your file including Surname, Title (abbreviate if necessary), Genre (PB, MG) and indicate if it is Non-Fiction NF: ex. Surname_Title_PB_NF
If you opt for a Portfolio Critique, your Portfolio critique submission should include the following:
A portfolio of work consisting of up to 10 images. Please supply your portfolio images as jpg 72dpi and label as: FirstName_Surname_sequential numbers up to 10. Maximum size for images is 2mb per image.
Sue Whiting is a children’s author and editor who has worked in publishing for 20+ years. Sue was senior commissioning editor and publishing manager for Walker Books Australia for many years before leaving in 2016 to concentrate on her writing. As a storyteller and schools’ performer, Sue has informed, inspired and entertained thousands of kids across the country. She is also a freelance editor and writing coach, and the author of numerous books, including the bestselling Missing, the award-winning A Swim in the Sea and the CBCA Notable Books, Platypus, Get a Grip Cooper Jones and Beware the Deep Dark Forest and Good Question.
