Join us for an afternoon at beautiful Woollahra Library, Double Bay, with publisher, Linsay Knight, who will give us the inside story of publishing at Walker Books. Linsay will also be offering manuscript critques for 3 lucky people!
Corinne Fenton & Marjorie Crosby-Fairall will tell how their book became the inspiration for the 2016 Myer Christmas Windows.
Linsay Knight—Publisher, Walker Books Australia
Linsay Knight has an esteemed career in children’s publishing literature and has taken the position as publisher at Walker Books Australia. She was the former head of children’s books at Random House for 7 years. In UK in 2003, she was Managing Editor at BBC Children's Books until 2004. Linsay is also passionate about poetry and in 2012 she and her husband, John Knight, launched the dynamic poetry imprint Pitt Street Poetry.
Corinne is an award winning author with a passion for picture books, often true stories and almost always about animals. Her books, published in Australia and internationally, include Queenie One Elephant’s Story,‘The Dog on the Tuckerbox, Flame Stands Waiting as well as the Hey Baby series and Chasing Shadows.
The best-selling Little Dog and the Christmas Wish, was the theme for the 2015 Myer Windows. Bob the Railway Dog was named a Notable Book in the 2016 Children’s Book Council Book of the Year Awards and the US version was named an outstanding book on the 2017 USBBY OIB Honour list. In 2016 You Have My Heart, Counting on You and One Christmas Eve which was also chosen for the 2016 Myer Christmas Windows, were released. In March 2017 My Friend Tertius was released and October 1st this year Little Dog’s adventures continue in the sequel, Little Dog and the Summer Holiday.
For almost eight years, Corinne (as King) was the Assistant Regional Adviser (Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia) of the Society of Children’s Book Writer’s and Illustrators in Australia. Corinne was the 2014/15 judge for the Primary Schools section, of the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards reading and judging around 6,000 poems from primary school students across Australia.
Marjorie is an award-winning illustrator whose books include Brothers from a Different Mother (Penguin RandomHouse), Mrs Dog (Five Mile Press), The Croc and the Platypus (Walker Books, shortlisted for Speech Pathology Award), My Little World (Ominbus, an imprint of Scholastic, shortlisted for the Wilderness Society Environment Award). Her book One Christmas Eve (with Corinne Fenton, Black Dog Books, an imprint of Walker Books) was the inspiration for the 2016 Myer Christmas Windows. She was awarded the CBCA Eve Pownall Award for her first picture book Killer Plants (Penguin).
Marjorie has worked across the gamut of illustration, including advertising, The School Magazine and Australian Geographic. A poster featuring Marjorie’s illustrations of Australia’s flora and fauna has been given for many years as a memento to every child who becomes a citizen.

A limited number of Manuscript Critiques will be available before the Christmas Event. Critiques are 20 minutes and are only available to people attending the Christmas event. At time of booking you will be able to choose your preference from the available time slots.

$70 per critique and places are limited to one per person. Critiques are limited to SCBWI members who are attending the Christmas Cheer Event. Critiques are non-refundable and non-transferable, so please choose carefully.

Submission Guidelines for Manuscript Critiques:
Following your booking CLICK HERE to submit your manuscript or picture book text or thumbnails. Please take note of the November12, 2017 deadline and the format for submissions. Unfortunately, submissions that are late or that do not conform to the specifications cannot be accepted.
Your Manuscript critique submission should include the following:
• An overview of your project to a maximum of 1 page including your name, email and website (if applicable)
AND IN THE SAME DOCUMENT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
• An outline of your project idea with synopsis and short writing samples for comment and discussion to a maximum of 10 pages, double spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or similar
• An extract of your draft manuscript to a maximum of 10 pages, double spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or similar
• A full picture book draft text to a maximum of 10 pages, double spaced in 12pt Times Roman or similar
• If a writer-illustrator an illustrated picture book dummy with text.
Most assessors prefer word document format so they can make inline notes, however, pdfs are also acceptable. Picture books in thumbnail form can be supplied as pdfs. Please label your file including Surname, Title (abbreviate if necessary), Genre (PB, C, YA) and indicate if it is Non-Fiction NF: ex. Surname_Title_PB_NF
