Join us for book craft and insights with Scholastic senior editor Kate Wenban and author/Illustrator Gabriel Evans in a SCBWI Zoom Event. Make sure you have your new books handy for a sharing of Member News.

 

 

Program

11 am—Welcome with Susanne Gervay and some Zoom Basics

11.15am – 12.15 pmMaking the most of your (inner) editor with Kate Wenban plus a short Q&A

An editor is an excellent resource who can help refine your creative vision and become your book’s biggest fan and champion. This talk will explain the different stages of creating a book, discuss the goal of editing, and provide tips on how to communicate effectively and professionally about things that are creative and personal. Learning how the editorial process works will help you to get the most out of it, and show you how to see with an editor’s eyes.

12.15 – 1.00pmThe Craft of Picture Book Illustrating with Gabriel Evans

In this session Gabriel will discuss his process of making picture books. He’ll share his approach to writing and illustrating his own work and illustrating a story for another author.  Gabriel will take you through his step-by-step approach in developing concepts, creating storyboards, finding the mood and working in his preferred choice of medium – watercolour. The session will include behind-the-scenes look at two work-in-progress books, a discussion on sketchbooks and using social media.

Zoom Manuscript or Portfolio Critiques with Kate Wenban

We are fortunate to have secured eight 15 minute manuscript or portfolio critiques with Kate Wenban, Senior Editor from Scholastic Australia before the SCBWI Zoom event. In addition she has offered two written critiques to be emailed after the event. Kate says her main area of expertise is in middle-grade fiction and chapter books, but she is happy to look at picture books and portfolios too, as she works with illustrators and has experience with picture books.

Critiques are 15 minutes plus an additional scheduled time for changeover. Critiques are limited to SCBWI members attending this Zoom event. At time of booking you will be able to choose your preference from the available time slots. Critique Tickets will be released April 8th at 8am. This is an automated opening of tickets so it is first in best dressed!

Following your successful booking, submit your manuscript via the form linked below. Deadline for manuscripts is May 24. Please submit only once with the final version that you would like to be critiqued!

You will be sent an email with instructions for your Zoom Critique. The two written critiques will be emailed in the days following the event.

Submission Guidelines for Manuscript Critiques

Following your booking CLICK HERE to submit your manuscript or picture book text or thumbnails. Please take note of the May 24, 2020 deadline and the format for submissions. Unfortunately, submissions that are late or that do not conform to the specifications cannot be accepted. Please submit only once with the final version that you would like to be critiqued!

 

Your Manuscript critique submission should include the following:

An overview of your project to a maximum of 1 page including your name, email and website (if applicable)

AND IN THE SAME DOCUMENT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

An outline of your project idea with synopsis and short writing samples for comment and discussion to a maximum of 10 pages, double spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or similar

OR

An extract of your draft manuscript to a maximum of 10 pages, double spaced in 12pt Times New Roman or similar

OR

A full picture book draft text to a maximum of 10 pages, double spaced in 12pt Times Roman or similar (One picture book only, even if it’s just a few pages long)

OR

If a writer-illustrator an illustrated picture book dummy with text. (One picture book only)

Most assessors prefer word document format so they can make inline notes, however, pdfs are also acceptable. Picture books in thumbnail form can be supplied as pdfs. Please label your file including Surname, Title (abbreviate if necessary), Genre (PB, MG) and indicate if it is Non-Fiction NF: ex. Surname_Title_PB_NF

 

If you opt for a Portfolio Critique, your Portfolio critique submission should include the following:

A portfolio of work consisting of up to 10 images. Please supply your portfolio images as jpg 72dpi and label as: FirstName_Surname_sequential numbers up to 10. Maximum size for images is 2mb per image.

Presenters

Kate Wenban
Kate Wenban is a Senior Editor at Scholastic Australia and has been working in children’s publishing for more than ten years. In that time she’s edited Australian picture books, middle grade illustrated fiction and junior fiction—including Ella Diaries, 200 Minutes of Danger, Daring Delly and Fartboy. Kate has also had extensive experience writing and editing books for major licensors such as Disney, Marvel, Nickelodeon and DC Comics. Kate’s academic background is in psychology, cultural studies and English. 

 

Gabriel Evans
Gabriel Evans is an author and illustrator of picture books. He has illustrated for several acclaimed Australian and USA authors through publishers including Penguin, Simon & Schuster (USA) and Scholastic. He also writes and illustrates his own books including his most recent release, Ollie and Augustus (Walker Books). Gabriel is working on five books to be released over the next eighteen months. He balances his job with drinking tea and growing oak trees.
