The Illustrator Showcase is a key feature of the  SCBWI Sydney Conference, an exclusive event aimed at displaying SCBWI talent to leading professionals in the children’s book industry. At the 2016 SCBWI showcase more than fifty publishers, editors, designers and other industry professionals viewed the exhibition resulting in contracts for new and established illustrators. It’s an unprecedented opportunity for illustrators to get their work seen by publishers and places are limited.

Selection Process

Due to high demand for places in the showcase and the need to promote portfolios of a professional standard, entries will be subject to a selection process and places will be awarded at the discretion of the SCBWI Illustrators Committe. To apply for a place, please complete the booking process, pay the entry fee and submit three samples of your work for the Online Gallery. (see instructions below). The SCBWI Illustrators Committee will evaluate each entry to ensure that work is of a sufficient standard to submit to publishers  – this doesn’t mean that you need to have been published previously. If your application is unsuccessful, you will be notified and your Showcase fee will be refunded.

Illustrator Showcase Fees and Bookings 

$70 Attending Conference
$80 Not Attending Conference (SCBWI Members from Australia East & New Zealand only)
There are only a very limited number of tickets available for illustrators who are not attending the conference so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Key Dates

1st November 2018:  Upload bio, contact, website or instagram details and three samples of your “Ready for Publication” work for inclusion in the online gallery (see below for specifications).
 Late submissions will NOT be included! The samples you submit will be used for our online gallery.

18th February 2019: Final date for submission of portfolios by mail (for SCBWI members NOT attending the conference).

25th February 2019 at 8am: Hand delivery of portfolios to the Port Jackson Room, Level 1 of the Novotel Sydney Central Hotel  (for showcase participants who ARE attending the conference). Please be prompt! Industry professionals will be start to arrive from 9am.

 

 


Portfolio Exhibition Guidelines

To assist in Perfecting your Portfolio, we have compiled the feedback from previous Showcase on the SCBWI Blog.

For details and guidelines on how to enter your work in this exciting exhibition, see below. Please read the conditions carefully, as unfortunately portfolios that don’t meet the specified criteria cannot be included in the exhibition.

 

Online Gallery

These images will be evaluated by the SCBWI Illustrators Committee during the selection process for Showcase spots, so select strong images that are representative of your style. Information about exhibiting illustrators will also be posted on the SCBWI website. You will need to provide:

• Three (3) digital images of your work labeled with your name in lower-case and hyphen instead of space (.jpg, 2000 px wide, 72 dpi)

• Name of your illustrations (if applicable)

• 100 word bio

• The URL of your website and or other social media for viewing additional images

What to submit:

• Portfolio

• Dummy (optional)
 (A dummy cannot be submitted without a portfolio)

• Business Card and /or postcards

 

Portfolio specifications:

• Only one (1) portfolio permitted per SCBWI member

• Portfolios must consist of a standard A3 folder containing no more than 10 plastic sleeves

• Please DO NOT include original artworks – prints only

• Portfolios must be participant’s own artwork

• Please put your name and contact details clearly on/in your portfolio

• Including a dummy (mockup book) is optional. Only one dummy is permitted and it must be attached securely to your portfolio. Dummies cannot be submitted without a portfolio.

 

Please note what is not permitted:

• Oversized portfolios

• Non-secured portfolio (images not securely attached to portfolio)

• Original art

• Framed art

• Published books

• 3-dimensional art

• Easels, stands or props of any kind

• Portfolios in unusual novelty formats, such as boxes

 

Promotional Postcards:

• To be placed by your portfolio

• Amount: up to 100 suggested

• Size: up to 5 × 7 inches

Please include your name and contact information. Publisher feedback suggests they liked to have several images from which to choose.

 

 


Delivery and Return of portfolios/postcards/business cards

 

For Illustrators who are NOT attending the Conference:

Portfolios/postcards/business cards must arrive no later than February 18th 2019.

All portfolios of Illustrators who are NOT attending the Conference will be returned via mail so please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return delivery. We recommend Australia Post Parcel Post Satchels. We regret that if you do not include a return envelope, we will be unable to return your portfolio to you.

The illustrator will carry the responsibility for, and cost of insurance and transport to and from the SCBWI Conference at The Novotel Sydney Central Hotel. SCBWI takes all care but no responsibility for any damage to or of works submitted to the Showcase.

You will receive an email to confirm when your portfolio has been received.

 

For Illustrators who ARE attending the Conference:

Portfolios/postcards/business cards must be delivered at 8.00am on Monday 25th February 2019 to the Port Jackson Room, Level 1 of the Novotel Sydney Central Hotel. Please be prompt! Industry professionals will be start to arrive from 9am.

All portfolios must be reclaimed in person after the Showcase by 6.00pm on Monday 25 February. The Illustrator Committee will be on hand to assist.

 

The illustrator will carry the responsibility for, and cost of insurance and transport to and from the SCBWI Conference at the Novotel Sydney Central Hotel. SCBWI takes all care but no responsibility for any damage to or of works submitted to the Showcase.

Terms and Conditions

SCBWI is a not-for-profit volunteer run organisation and all proceeds from these tickets are committed to Event expenses. Unfortunately we are unable to provide refunds, but we will allow transfer of Conference ticket to another eligible SCBWI member.

 Illustrator Showcase and Critique tickets are non-transferable.
