Conference FAQs

 

Venues

The Conference events will be spread out over three venues.

 

The main conference events and accommodation:

Novotel Sydney Central
169-179 Thomas Street

The majority of the Conference Events and facilities will be located on Level 1 of the Novotel in the Combined Bennelong and Farm Cove Rooms.

Registration is located at the top of the stairs on the first floor and will begin at 8am.

Morning and Afternoon Tea will be in the First Floor Pre-Function Area.

The Illustrator Showcase will be located on Level 1 Port Jackson Room from 9.00am to 6.00pm on Monday February 25th. (Illustrators drop off their portfolios in the Port Jackson Room from 8.00am on Monday and pick them up by 5.45pm.)

Face to Face Manuscript and Portfolio Critiques on Monday will be on the ground floor Watson Bay Room. Your ticket will have your critique time and assessor, but you can confirm your time at the registration table. Tuesday critiques are at the State Library of NSW along with the Master Classes. International Critiques take the form of a written report which will be delivered by 28 February.

Lunch on Monday will be available at the hotel restaurant and will be split into two separate times to accommodate all the delegates. Your time for lunch was selected at the time of booking, but you can confirm which time you have selected at the registration table.

The optional Dinner Dance will be in the First Floor Ballroom (i.e. the combined Bennelong/Farm Cove/Port Jackson Rooms).

A cash bar will be available in the First Floor Pre-Function area. (Cash only—there are no facilities for credit, eftpost or charging to rooms.)

Master Classes on Tuesday:

The Master Classes will be in the Mitchell Building of the State Library of NSW.

A registration table will be set up outside the Glasshouse and the Master Classes will be in either the Learning Centre or the Glasshouse. To locate the registration table and the Glasshouse, enter via the Mitchell Steps, walk through the vestibule into the Reading Room. Go down the stairs just inside the Reading Room that lead to the Dalgety Walkway. You will then be able to see the SCBWI banner and registration table.

If you booked a Critique for Tuesday you can confirm the location for your critique at the registration table.

 

 

 

 

 

Pre-Conference Social Events:

Celebration of Books at the Children’s Bookshop, Beecroft

(we will be meeting in the lobby of the Novotel and taking the train to Beecroft)

For those travelling from the city by train, we will be meeting in the Novotel Sydney Central foyer from 1pm. Because there will over 100 of us, we are going to travel in shifts. Susanne Gervay will be walking from the hotel to Central shortly after 1pm. Deborah Abela will be leaving at 1:25pm.

The train from Central to Beecroft takes about 40 mins. The bookshop is right next to Beecroft station.

You can buy train tickets from the station or you can purchase an opal card, but please factor this into the time it will take for the amount of people travelling.

 

Novotel for Social Drinks from 6.30pm

Because so many people have indicated that they want to attend the drinks, the location has been moved upstairs to the First Floor Pre-Function area.
A cash bar will be available. (Cash only—there are no facilities for credit, eftpost or charging to rooms.)

 

 

Accommodation

The Novotel Sydney Central Hotel is offering a limited number of twin share rooms at a discounted rate for attending delegates. Book directly with The Novotel and request the Special Accommodation Rate for the SCBWI Conference.

Twin Share Room (two double beds) $239

In addition, they are offering parking for $20 per day at Wilson Parking. Validate parking ticket at Novotel front desk to receive special rate.

 

 

Transport and Parking
For up-to-date Public transportation information visit the Sydney Transport website or try one of the apps available.

Located just ten kilometers from Sydney Airport and just a few minutes walk from Central Station, The Novotel Sydney Central Hotel is the ideal setting for exploring all that Sydney has to offer. Enjoy one of the best locations in the city — in the heart of the CBD, near iconic attractions such as the Sydney Opera House, The Rocks, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Darling Harbour Precinct and The Royal Botanic Gardens.

Parking: The Novotel Sydney Central Hotel is offering parking for $20 per day at Wilson Parking. Validate parking ticket at Novotel front desk to receive special rate. Contact Novotel directly for up-to-date parking information.

Public transport into the City and the State Library: The Novotel Sydney Central Hotel is located minutes walk from Central train station and buses and trains come frequently. The State Library is a short walk from either Martin Place Station or St James Station or a slightly longer walk from Wynyard Station. For up-to-date Public transportation information visit the Sydney Transport website or try one of the apps available.

From the Airport: A Taxi should take 30-40 minutes and cost $35-$50, depending on traffic. Alternatively, take the airport train to Central, ($17) and the hotel is just a few minutes walk.

 

Conference Registration
Conference Registration takes place on Level 1 of the Novotel Sydney Central Hotel on Monday 25th February 2019 from 8am.

 

 

Conference Notice Board
The Conference Notice Board will be located next to the Registration Table and will outline the Conference Program, Critique Schedule and any Conference updates.

 

 

Manuscript and Portfolio Critiques
Face-to-face Manuscript and Portfolio Critiques are held on Monday and Tuesday during the Conference and Master Classes with a range of editors and publishers from major Australian and US publishing houses. If you have booked a Critique your assessor and time slot will be on your Trybooking ticket, however, the schedule for critiques will also be posted on the Conference Notice Board located next to the Registration Table on level 1 of the Novotel Sydney Central Hotel. Please note that we occasionally need to make changes to the schedule due to last minute changes in assessor availability.

Critiques are 15 minutes with a scheduled 5 minute changeover and on Monday will take place on the ground floor of the Novotel Hotel in the Watson Bay Room.

On Tuesday, the critiques will take place near the Master Classes at the State Library of NSW. Please check at the Registration table outside the Dixson Room in the Mitchell Building of the State Library for your critique location (see map above). SCBWI Volunteers will be on hand to assist.

International Critiques take the form of a written report that will be delivered by 28 February.

 

 

Food
Food choices during the conference will include vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free alternatives. To assist in catering, please indicate your dietary needs at time of booking.

Sunday: Social Drink at the Novotel Sydney Central Hotel with drinks at your own expense

Monday: Morning tea and afternoon tea will be available throughout the Conference. Lunch is a smorgasbord available at the Hotel Restaurant.

Tuesday: There is a cafe at the State Library NSW and many cafes in walking distance. Food and drink at your own expense.

 

 

A Few Reminders
Be gentle with the conference organisers – they are all volunteers. If you have a problem, let someone know in a courteous manner and they’ll do their best to help. They are lovely!

Terms and Conditions

SCBWI is a not-for-profit volunteer run organisation and all proceeds from these tickets are committed to Event expenses. Unfortunately we are unable to provide refunds, but we will allow transfer of Conference ticket to another eligible SCBWI member.

 Illustrator Showcase and Critique tickets are non-transferable.
